Tenby Boxing Day Swim

The 41st swim was treated to a huge turnout, with 691 swimmers and a massive crowd. Record numbers of charity bathers take the plunge at Tenby’s annual Boxing Day swim (picture gallery) – Wales News – News from @walesonline.

A fine drizzle, but significantly warmer than last year’s snow covered beach allowed, made for kind conditions for the swimmers, but the very low tide meant a long sprint/canter/run/walk to the calm waters. Preceded by a canoe race and another hotly contested raft race, the swim’s fancy dress was based on “Tenby on TV”, reflecting the town’s multi-TV appearances through 2011.

“Don’t tell the bride”, “Mayday mayday”, “Grand Designs”, ” Tenby 24/7″ and Tesco’s Christmas advert – featuring the swim with “tea in Tenby” – complemented by video coverage of the first Ironman triathlon event in Tenby, all featured in the parade.

Sarah & H 4tet played a lively brunch for us on 23rd October. Sarah’s sweeping voice and Hywel’s exact guitar even had some of the audience dancing at the last.

Ann Maggs retires

Our head receptionist, Ann Maggs has retired after 33 years at the hotel. We shall miss her enthusiasm, commitment & ‘green fingers’. Below a picture of her send off party, attended by her family and the many people who have worked alongside her over so many years.

Ironman Wales

1,500 competitors from over 40 countries swim 2.4 miles, cycle 117 miles, run 26 miles to complete the very first Ironman Wales. Starting at 7am, they have to finish by midnight to qualify as Ironmen or Ironladies, but the winner checks in under 9 hours.

What a spectacle, what a buzz in Tenby all weekend. Fourcroft served breakfast for the 30 competitors staying with us from 4.15am and had the very best view of the swim which involved two circuits of the bay in front of the town’s North Beach.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire & West Wales all benefit from this international event & its legacy value. And we have it for five years. A great success for all the organisers, funders & sponsors.

The Last Brunch Before Summer

Last Month’s Jazz Brunch featured The Milestone Quintet and, as you can see, they offered up a performance full of energy and imagination. There will be no event in August, but on September the 25th the Brunch will return with the Keith Little Trio performing.

In the meantime it’s August, and that means the Summer Holidays.

338 runners this year, a superb effort from the competitors and the organisers, the TROTS. A finish in Tudor Square with large crowds applauding seemed to please everyone. Fourcroft’s own Tom Simpson, running for Cancer Relief, came in 159th position with a very creditable time of 49.22. More info here. You can see some of the videos here and here.

Pembrokeshire’s best beaches: Broad Haven South

With beautiful beaches on hand, visitors to Tenby are not short of places to stroll, sunbathe or swim. However, these are only a fraction of Pembrokeshire’s many magnificent beaches. Far more than can be enjoyed in a single visit. Over the next few weeks we’ll be showing you some of the very best of them. First up is the stunning Broad Haven South.

The beach is just over half an hour’s drive from Tenby and only a few miles south of Pembroke. It’s soft sands are protected from the wind by headlands at either end of the beach and the gentle slope of the bay means swimmers can enter the water gradually. The beach is large, so will only feel crowded on the busiest days of the summer, and has a car park nearby.

The best way to arrive at the beach though, is on foot, through nearby Bosherston Lily Ponds. Not only can walkers enjoy the sights and sounds of the ponds themsleves…

…but also a spectacular first sight of this sublime piece of shoreline.
